This lesson is another in a series of word studies. In this case it does show the importance of using a concordance. There are no conclusions attached to this text. I believe that the Bible can speak on its own. Bu, when using studies put together by others, I will leave in the comments they felt compelled to add. To use another lesson, you have to believe that the information has been gathered by guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Garment

KJV Matthew 22:2-14

2. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

3. And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

4. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

5. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

6. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

7. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

8. Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.

9. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.

10. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

11. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:

12. And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

13. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

14. For many are called, but few are chosen.

4. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

5. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

Strong's Ref. # 272

Strong's Ref. # 4153

adverb from GSN4152; non-physically, i.e. divinely, figuratively:

10. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

Strong's Ref. # 4190

from a derivative of GSN4192; hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, and thus differing from GSN2556, which refers rather to essential character, as well as from GSN4550, which indicates degeneracy from original virtue); figuratively, calamitous; also (passively) ill, i.e. diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners:

KJV--bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked(-ness). See also GSN4191.

12. And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

Strong's Ref. # 3361

a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas GSN3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverbially) not, (conjunctionally) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer [whereas GSN3756 expects an affirmative one]) whether:

KJV--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, [can-]not, nothing, that not, un[-taken], without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations. See also GSN3362, GSN3363, GSN3364, GSN3372, GSN3373, GSN3375, GSN3378.

What does the wedding garment represent?

KJV Isaiah 61:10

10. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

KJV Numbers 15:38-40

38. Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue:

39. And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the Lord, and do them and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:

40. That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.

KJV Psalms 104:1-2

1. Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.

2. Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

KJV Isaiah 61:3

3. To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Garment represents God's law, righteousness and salvation.

For every doctrine from God, Satan has many counterfeits. The man at the wedding was not said to be naked. What did the garments of his choosing represent?

KJV Isaiah 59:6

6. Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands

KJV Ezekiel 16:15-17

15. But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.

16. And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so.

17. Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them,

(See Isaiah 61:10)

KJV Malachi 2:16

16. For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

KJV Ezekiel 26:16

16. Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay away their robes, and put off their broidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall tremble at every moment, and be astonished at thee.

See Numbers 15:38-40

As one thing leads to another, so will be the fate of man who feels he must make a name for himself by changing the word of God. First the Sanctuary must be put aside, then the law of God must be made void. Then, of what value is the Bible, when the interpretation is by man for man?

For Satan looks to tumble one pillar of doctrine, to weaken the others, and collapse the foundation of God's word. Will Satan succeed? Will the doctrines chosen by men be allowed to enter with him into heaven?

If garments represent the doctrine of God, old garments must represent the false doctrines followed by man.

KJV James 5:1-3

1. Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.

2. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

3. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

KJV Isaiah 50:9

9. Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

KJV Isaiah 51:6

6. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

KJV Isaiah 51:8

8. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.

The doctrines being changed by man will not survive. But God still calls out to those that think their ways are superior to His.

KJV Genesis 35:2

2. Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:

KJV Zechariah 3:1-4

1. And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

2. And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

3. Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.

4. And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

KJV Revelation 16:15

15. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

KJV Ezekiel 44:17

17. And it shall come to pass, that when they enter in at the gates of the inner court, they shall be clothed with linen garments; and no wool shall come upon them, whiles they minister in the gates of the inner court, and within.

KJV Matthew 9:16

16. No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

Did the following prediction about Jesus also predict the many representations of the Gospel that we see today, in the last days?

KJV Psalms 22:18

18. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
