The following study shows that Jesus did not put His private interpretation on the real objects He used in His parables, but rather, He searched the scriptures to determine the spiritual meaning.
KJV Luke 8:5
5. A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
Applying the Bible principle of "comparing spiritual things with spiritual" (Isa 28:9,10 and 1Cor 2:13) and referring only to the old testament since they were the only scripture available to Jesus:
SEED
KJV Ecclesiastes 11:6
6. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
KJV Psalms 97:11
11. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
KJV Psalms 119:105
105. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
If seed is sown, and light is sown, and light is the word, then the seed is the word that is sown. Just as Jesus said.
KJV Psalms 112:1-2
1. Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
2. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed
KJV Isaiah 55:10-11
10. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
11. So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
SOWER
The sower is described in the verse as someone who sows seed, or someone who distributes the Word or the Scriptures. So, the sower represents someone who teaches the Word to others.
KJV Luke 8:5
5. A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
WAYSIDE
KJV 1 Samuel 4:13
13. And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
KJV Psalms 140:5
5. The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
Strong's Ref. # 1870
Pronounced deh'-rek
from HSN1869; a road (as trodden); figuratively, a course of life or mode of action, often adverb:
The wayside represents a path of life, or wherever a person is in their life's journey.
TRODDEN DOWN
KJV Jeremiah 12:10
10. Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.
KJV Ezekiel 34:18
18. Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have drunk of the deep waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet?
19. And as for my flock, they eat that which ye have trodden with your feet; and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.
KJV Psalms 8:6
6. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
As shown in Psalms 8:6, to have something underfoot, is to have dominion over it.
When pastors and others who teach people the word, teach error or false doctrine, they are treading God's word under foot, because they are presuming to have power over it, when they think to change it. (Isa 58:3, Ps 119:101)
When the seed fell by the wayside, it was trodden down. This means that the Word of truth that was presented to the listeners was afterward changed into false teachings (trodden under foot).
KJV Luke 8:5
5. A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
FOWLS
KJV Genesis 7:14
14. They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
KJV Proverbs 6:5
5. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
KJV Proverbs 27:8
8. As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.
A bird or a fowl represents a person.
DEVOURED

from GSN2596 and GSN2068 (including its alternate); to eat down, i.e. devour (literally or figuratively):
KJV Jeremiah 15:16
16. Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.
To devour figuratively means to gain or accept knowledge.
KJV Luke 8:5
5. A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
TO PARAPHRASE:
A teacher of the word (sower) went out to teach (sow) the word (seed): and as he taught (sowed), some of the word (some seed) was changed by false teachers (seed trodden under foot), and some people (fowls) accepted those false teachings (devoured it) instead of the word of truth.
KJV Luke 8:6
6. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture
ROCK
KJV Jeremiah 5:1-3

KJV Zechariah 7:12
12. Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.
The rock represents the mind or the heart of a person who refuses the truth. Their mind is as hard as a rock.
KJV Mark 4:5-6
5. And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
6. But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

20. That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
The stony ground represents a hard heart, which is not willing to obey God. The spirit in that heart is not God's Spirit.

KJV Isaiah 11:10
10. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
The seed having no root represents a person who hears the Word and because he does not have Jesus in his heart, he can not have the Holy Spirit (lacked moisture) and therefor he forgets God and the Word.

6. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
